The Turner Family
Charles G. Turner founded Turner Dairy Farms in 1930
at the height of the Great Depression. Charles
traveled with 2 cows to farmland in the Pittsburgh
suburb of Penn Hills, about 10 miles east of the
city. Its there he met Grace Frye and the two
worked out an agreement so Charles would rent
Grace’s farmland for the dairy for the cost of the
taxes on the land. Grace went on to become Charles
first employee. Charles was a true visionary and
quickly became known for his high quality milk. As
Charles’ dairy business grew so did his need for
high quality milk. Charles developed a relationship
with a number of local family dairy farms to supply
Turner’s with raw milk that Charles would process,
bottle, and deliver.
Fast forward several decades as Charles’ sons Jim,
Walt, and Chuck joined the family dairy in different
capacities. Jim, a graduate of Penn State in Dairy
Science, joined
Charles in the 1950s and helped to incorporate the
business in 1953. After graduation Chuck (Penn
State) and Walt (Michigan State) joined the family
business in 1965 and 1967 respectively. Both Chuck
and Walt continue to work for the company today.
Now in its third generation of ownership Turner’s
continues to produce the highest quality, award
winning milk and dairy products. We are proud to
continue our longstanding relationships with a
number of local family dairy farms, some of which
have been supplying us with milk since the 1940s and
50s! We believe passionately in supporting local
and sustainable agriculture and will continue
bringing the highest quality milk and dairy products
from local farms to local families! Please join us
in supporting local agriculture and help preserve
the history and character of our communities as well
staying connected to the food you eat.
Charles started the company on three simple
principles: Perfect Products, Perfect Service,
Treat People Right! We work hard everyday to
see these principles in all we do. We know Charles
would be proud!
